This is an intermediate/advanced level dance technique experience offering a brief delving/re-delving into Molly Shanahan's signature modes of moving and making. Spiral Body Techniques™ is bolstered by Shanahan's research across three decades of evolving and ongoing improvisational and compositional practices morphed into techniques for dancing across a lifetime. Shanahan's influences include: healing early-career debilitating back pain; advanced study of Feldenkrais and the Continuum Method and other somatic methods; joyous, vigorous, and perpetually geeked-out research with the Molly Shanahan/Mad Shak ensemble and many students worldwide; and a PhD in Dance that collided practice with theory, flesh with text, and intimate personal story with scholarly structure.
This workshop offers a shorter version of the Process to Performance workshop with emphasis on (relatively advanced*) Spiral Body Techniques class, individual and group creative processes, seeing and being seen, without a culminating public showing.
Friday’s session will be a guided warm-up moving in and out of self-direction and into Molly’s phrasework.
Saturday and Sunday sessions will begin with SBT class, a 45-minute lunch break, and exploratory afternoons.
*Note: if you have taken any intermediate- or advanced-level contemporary technique class with Molly, this is a good choice. If you haven’t, and you’re interested in this workshop, get in touch and we can check in.
